Two ways to book: local Icelandic companies (newer fleets, insurance built for Iceland, airport desks) or international comparison sites (widest choice, lowest headline prices). We use both — here's how to choose.
| Option | Best for | What to know | |
|---|---|---|---|
| DiscoverCars comparison | Seeing every price at once | Aggregates local + international fleets at KEF. Free cancellation on most bookings. | Compare prices |
| Blue Car Rental local | New fleet, KEF airport desk | Iceland's largest local rental company; insurance packages built for Icelandic roads. | Check availability |
| Lava Car Rental local | Small-company service | Local outfit with solid reviews and straightforward gravel/ash cover options. | Check availability |
| Northbound marketplace | Icelandic fleets in one place | Iceland-only marketplace listing dozens of local rental companies and campers. | Browse fleets |

Iceland breaks cars in specific ways. These are the covers locals actually buy:
One rule: F-roads void everything unless you rent a 4x4 with F-road permission. River crossings are never insured — by anyone.
Economy 2WD is fine for the full paved loop. Book 2–3 months out — small cars sell out first in July.
4x4 SUV with studded winter tyres (fitted by law Nov–Apr). Add zero-excess: ice happens to careful drivers too.
True 4x4 (Land Cruiser class, not a crossover) with explicit F-road permission in the contract.
Brokers usually win on headline price; locals often win on total cost once you add equivalent insurance. Get a broker quote for your dates, then price the same class with one or two local companies including their full cover — five minutes that regularly saves €100+.
Yes — most local companies run 24/7 airport desks or shuttle pickups timed to flights. Confirm at booking and put your flight number in the reservation so delays don't cost you the car.
Most companies require a credit card in the driver's name for the deposit. A few accept debit with full-cover insurance. If you're card-limited, filter for "debit card accepted" on comparison sites before falling in love with a price.
A valid national licence in Latin script is enough (minimum 1 year held, drivers typically 20+, 23+ for 4x4s). Non-Latin licences need an International Driving Permit alongside.
